How are parents involved in the spiritual lives of their teens? We just finished a preliminary poll of 227 teens between 12-19 and asked them two things. One, how often do your parents talk with you about faith? And secondly, how often would you want then to talk with you about faith?

The chart below just takes into account the 80% of teens who attend church at least twice a month. Here's what teens said. On the right, is how they answered the first question. So, of the teens who said that their parents never talk with them about faith (in red) 35.7% of them want their parents to talk with them weekly, 14.3% monthly, 28.6% every so often and 21% wouldn't change it.

Confrontation... isn't that a scary word! I've heard many excuses for not confronting people. Some of these came right out of my mouth. Confrontation is a valuable part of these groups. If teens have truly established what they want out of these groups, and how to go about them, then they have - in essense -spelled out the framework and some rules they believe are important to follow. Just to refresh, here are the 5 statements most groups have agreed with.

Part 11 - Make it happen PDF Print E-mail

Hopefully you’ve been able to see how and why we are doing this. We want to help you get there but not do it for you. Think of it this way, you are looking at a cliff and you can’t get there alone. There is someone there who can either stand on the cliff and pull you up, or could tell you where to grab on and support you on your journey.  The adults are trying to have that second role.  They could to the work for you and pull you up but it’s so much better to help you get there.

Part 10 - Failure and Empowerment PDF Print E-mail

  • Good thing/ Bad thing
  • How did your challenge go?

Failure. It’s a word that no one likes to hear... especially if it’s about us. Is failure valuable? I wanted to take some time to address failure because it will happen. This is most likely a new concept still and there are some kinks to get worked out. What happens when things go wrong? What do you do when you are planning a project or reaching out to a group of peers at school and it all goes downhill? One of the hardest things to do has been to watch teens fail. Could I, or your mentor, step in and do everything so you don’t fail? Of course! But that wouldn’t allow you to learn from how to take ownership in your own faith. It’s easy for an adult to make sure none of the teens ever fail. They just have to do everything for them! I think failure if crucial. Let me come back to this after I talk about empowerment.
